Calvin Abdiel is completing a Master of Arts at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin with Professor Eldar Nebolsin. He has received a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was taught by Natalia Ricci.
Born in Jakarta and now based in Sydney, Calvin was the youngest pianist in the 2021 Sydney International Piano Competition and the only Australian to reach the final. He received the George Frederick Boyle Third Prize, the Nancy Weir Best Australian Pianist Award and an overseas scholarship to further his career. During 2022, he had an Australian debut recital tour across New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.
Calvin has received many international accolades, including third prize at the 2024 International Piano Competition Mauro Paolo Monopoli Prize in Italy, first prize at the 2020 Ananda Sukarlan Award in Indonesian and second prize and other awards at the 2018 Piano Val de Travers 2018 in Switzerland.
In 2017, Calvin made his orchestral debut with the St. Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, G20 Orchestra, Orchestra ICO Suoni del Sud and Les Chambrites.
Calvin has collaborated with a range of conductors, including Anatoly Rybalko, Gerard Schwarz, Richard Davis, Roger Benedict and Benedetto Montebello. As a chamber musician, he performed at the 2021 Canberra International Music Festival and 2023 Out West Piano Fest.
