Michael de Huy is completing a Bachelor of Music (Performance) as an Honours student at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Natalia Ricci.
A Chinese Vietnamese pianist born in Melbourne, Michael started piano studies at the age of four where he studied with Anatoly Dokumentov and later continued studying at Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School with Glenn Riddle.
Michael is an improviser, arranger and composer who has received numerous prizes. This includes first prize at the 2023 Valencia International Piano Festival Competition and the 2023 Sydney Conservatorium of Music Piano Concerto Competition as well as joint-recipient for the 2023 Theme & Variations Foundation Award.
Scholarships received from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and St Andrew’s College at University of Sydney has allowed Michael to attend music programs and masterclasses across Europe for over two years. During this time he studied with Marta Zabaleta, Sergei Edelmann, Jacques Rouvier, Paul Roberts and Pavel Nersessian.
Michael often intertwines improvisation and original composition in solo piano recitals, including for the Inspire Music Aust 2023 tour throughout regional New South Wales.
Earlier this year, Michael performed Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto Piano Concerto with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, where he played an original improvised arrangement as an encore.
